Journey To Heaven

AIM: To teach my class the stories of Abraham and the Israelites as they journeyed to the promise land and relate that to the journey of the Christian to heaven.

POINT OF CONTACT: Read the Scriptures - I Peter 2:11, 12, and explain the words, “… strangers and pilgrims…” and relate these words to Abraham and the Israelites.

I. STRANGERS - I Peter 2:11, 12
    A. ALIEN - someone from another planet.
    B. FOREIGNER - someone from another country = Russians, etc.

ILL: Someone you do not know knocks at the door = a stranger.

ILL: You knock on someone's door that you do not know - you are a stranger to them; they are unfriendly, hesitant, etc. your unwelcome as opposed to a friend that would knock.

ILL: When little, your mother used to say, “Don't talk to___? Strangers!

        1. Earth is not our country, native land, home etc.         2. It is the place we are traveling through to get home.         3. To the world we are Strangers, Foreigners, Aliens!         4. Won't always be treated right, fair, friendly, etc.

II. PILGRIMS
    A. Someone on a journey, and somewhere.

ILL: Pilgrims we studied in school – from England to America.

    B. At times, the journey was rough, problems, sickness, etc.
    C. Anyone to and could see that these people were different!

III. OLD TESTAMENT EXAMPLES
    A. ABRAHAM - pictures the Christian life / journey through it.
        1. He lived in an idolatrous land - Hebrews 11:8 picturing our lost condition.
        2. He was called out of that place :9 picturing salvation.
        3. He lived a life of faith – “The just shall live by___?” He was to grow and mature, picturing Jesus in his life. ILL: Jesus left His home; He was separated from His Father.
        4. He lived in tents - temporary dwelling places = our bodies, homes, families, etc.
        5. He was headed for a new land :10-16 as we are heading for the heavenly city - Revelation 21:2, 10, 23, 27.     B. THE NATION OF ISRAEL
        1. IN EGYPT - slaves under taskmasters, picturing us as lost, in slavery to sin, obeying the flesh, etc.
        2. A DELIVERER CAME – Moses (Jesus) and let them out = salvation.
        3. First thing that came to was water / Red Sea = baptism.
        4. Waters closed, could not go back = eternal security, cannot lose salvation.
        5. They passed through to WW (wilderness) to Promised Land = heaven/VCL.

IV. RULES / GUIDELINES FOR THE TRIP
    A. REASONS FOR RULES
        1. To have a safe journey ILL: Highway speeds, etc.
        2. To arrive at your destination safely.
        3. To stay out of trouble / avoid trouble along the way, tickets, etc.
    B. SOME RULES and GUIDELINES
        1. Metal not - don't stir up unnecessary trouble. Deuteronomy 2:4, 5, I Thessalonians 4:11, 12, I Timothy 2:2.
        2. Pay for what you get – Deuteronomy 2:6, 27-29, II Thessalonians 3:10.

ILL: World's opinion of preachers, “…always begging for money.”

    C. LORD BE SEPARATED/DIFFERENT FROM THE WORLD
        1. We are not to learn their ways - Deuteronomy 18:9, Jeremiah 10:2.
        2. We are to be ignorant of their sins - Romans 16:19.
        3. We are to be separated - Romans 121, 2, Matthew 17:2.
            (a)We are not to look, dress, act, talk like them - I John 2:15-17.
            (b) We are not to Fellowship with them - II Corinthians 6:14-18.
        4. We are to be different - Exodus 11:7, Leviticus 10:10, 20:26.
    D. WE ARE NOT TO GET SIDETRACKED.
        1. Lay up treasure in heaven - Matthew 6:19-21, Hebrews 10:34.

V. ONE DAY WE WILL REACH HEAVEN
    A. We will have what we have sent ahead.
    B. We will lose what we stored up on earth.
    C. We will see Jesus face to face.
    D. We will either be confident or ashamed - I John 2:28.
    E. He will either say, Well done thou good and faithful servant, or, What in the world were you thinking?
    F. When will live forever in the eternal city.

QUESTIONS:
1. Why spend so much time in thought over what is going to be in the auction in just a little while?
2. Why worry about what you have on the journey and not give the first thought about where you are headed?
3. Why spend the majority of money, time, and effort on that which will one day be burned up?
4. Will you stop and think?
    A. Are you saved?
    B. Are you living for the temporary or eternal?
    C. Are you enjoying the journey?
    D. Are you staying within the guidelines?
